Dental tartar is a form of hardened dental plaque. It is caused by the continual accumulation of minerals from saliva on plaque on the teeth. Once tartar forms, it becomes very difficult to remove. If tartar forms at the gum line, it eventually leads to inflammation and progressive gum disease. It left untreated, it leads to a more serious form of gum disease called periodontitis. Pockets of bacteria get trapped beneath the gums eventually leading to bone and tissue loss that holds the teeth in place. This eventually leads to tooth loss and secondary disease that can spread to the heart, liver, and kidneys.
At Culver Pet Clinic, all professional dental cleanings are performed under general anesthesia. Don't be fooled by a non-anesthetic dental. It is impossible to be able to clean above the gum line on a pet that is awake and sometimes improperly restrained which can lead to injury of your pet. We take all precautions pertaining to general anesthesia. It is mandatory that all pets have a full physical examination and blood work prior to the dental. On the day of the procedure, an intravenous catheter is placed and fluids are administered. Monitoring is performed by the veterinarian or registered veterinary technician (RVT) as well with equipment to measure EKG, blood pressure, heart rate, CO2 levels, and body temperature. Your pet is never left unattended until they are completely recovered. Digital radiographs are taken to ensure proper assessment of your pet's mouth. Your pet is sent home with before and after photos of their teeth, copy of their radiographs, and a chart with full explanation of their teeth.
